I will have to get a photobucket account and link to a pic of the wee black & white guy. He was a stray and was hanging around where I live looking terribly thin, unhealthy and uncared for. Someone sent round a flyer describing him exactly, with the accent on the little dark goatee under his chin. I rang saying where he was, to people just around the corner from where I live and they never came to get him. That was seven years ago.
Since then he's been restored to health but with a feral wandering tendency. I wish I had got him neutered at that stage as it may have prevented the accident that saw him hit by a speeding car in the main road. He survived that with the loss of the sight in his left eye, a broken jaw and several lost and broken teeth.
But he bounced back from that and was neutered at that time which has stopped the worst of his wandering. Most of the time he seems a very contented cat. I'm sure he was mistreated in his early years before I found him.

He's a dear wee guy and he is certainly not mistreated, but spoiled these days.

Fingers crossed......after a spell during which his behaviour has been skittish, even by his standards, I hope Billy is getting back to normal now.

It seemed he suffered some form of trauma three to four weeks ago that caused him to lose his appetite, become reticent about coming into the house and changing all the places he rests routinely. Some kind of normality seems to be back with his eating, at least. They say pets take after their owners and this pet owner has a major reputation for eating a lot. Rolling Eyes

Yes, I know, so when you have a few minutes to spare, please tell us about your doggies in Pet Pourri.

Since the previous post, Billy the cat has been up and down and faces a trip to the vet on Wednesday for his booster injections, but also a good checkover.I'm hoping against hope the problem hasnt been anything that a course of anti-biotics cannot resolve. The major change has been that having only previously shown interest in drinking cream, the wee guy is now drinking lots of water. Lots of people have read different significance into this, from leukaemia to diabetes. I am trying to keep an open mind and let the vet establish the real reason.

Poor Billy. The prognosis is very poor as kidney failure is further advanced than I thought and even than the vet first thought, but blood tests showed he is in a very bad way. It's a tough one when presented with the choices of letting him live in great discomfort as a pale shadow of his former self, or doing what may be a merciful act in letting the vet put my dear, beautiful pet to sleep. He's been left on a glucose drip for 24 hours and I go back and the critical time is later this afternoon. Iam trying to take my personal emotion out of the equation and just do the best for my cat. Even so, this is a tough decision.

Further to the above, Billy did come home on 27 August and having been on a drip and re-hydrated for most of 48 hours he did seem a healthier and happier cat again. This was good to see. But sadly it lasted less than 72 hours, after which he stopped eating solid food and the tablets. He was drinking water until the final signs that it was time to make a merciful decision were that he was vomiting up water within a minute of having had a drink and then he tried walking down the garden and it was clear his legs could no longer support his weight.

So with the greatest sadness but confidence it was the best decision I could make, Billy went back to the vet for a final time this morning and was put to sleep.

Rest in peace, lil Billy, dearest friend, companion and pet. He will be missed but remembered with the deepest love and affection.

That is very sad and I understand how you must be feeling. The reason why I no longer have pets is because the parting is too much and seeing them suffering is just as bad.

My last bitch, a German Shepherd had arthritis all along her spine and my last horse had a brain tumour. I was going to breed cats but after six weeks I was a sobbing wreck after selling the first one.

Thats very sad about your German Shepherd too.

I had a while mourning Billy and then thinking about whether I wanted to have another cat. It didn't take long to decide that I'd like to have another,so I am visiting an organisation called RAIN trhis weekend...that's Rescued Animals in Need with a view to adopting a kitten.

Well now I have sweet wee Bonnie. She is a mostly ginger cat with white feet, 2 years old so not a kitten. She is settling in well after two weeks.

The acid test comes after a strongly advised spell of three weeks confined to the house. Then she can go out and we will see if she just disappears in seconds or if she is going to be the family pet I hope she is.
